Toorak Residence
Working closely with the client, we brought together their lifestyle, tastes and vision with our own ideas and experience to create a home that is both beautiful and easy to live in. The design grew from a careful balance of structure, function, budget and aesthetics, while respecting the character of the original period home.
The kitchen was relocated and reoriented towards the patio, garden and pool, creating a much stronger connection between the heart of the home and the outdoors. The pantry, laundry and powder room were thoughtfully planned with direct outside access, allowing them to work seamlessly as a pool change room. Handmade rusted steel fencing frames the pool, angled carefully to preserve an uninterrupted view from the kitchen and patio.
The dining and family spaces curve gently around the raised patio, bringing together a double fireplace, projector and beautiful views across the pool and rear deck. Inside, the Corten steel fencing takes on a life of its own, rippling and changing as you move through the home.
While the finished spaces feel effortless, there is a lot of careful thinking behind them. The design considers not just how the family lives now, but how the home will continue to support them over time. Practical details are tucked into the design including laundry baskets within bathroom joinery, built-in dog beds, bin chutes and overhead tilt-up cupboard doors. Each element was considered to make everyday life easier, while creating a home with the flexibility and durability to last for years to come.
