MASS Accommodation Cabins
MANSFIELD
Initially, MASS selected Kirby Architects to design four Kirby Collection accommodation cabins to accommodate MASS clients and their family members visiting their Mansfield based facility. Since commencing our relationship, MASS has dramatically enlarged our scope to include:
12 Kirby Collection CabinsLodges – 2 lodges, 8 beds eachSimone’s Hut Meeting Place School Barn Open Barn Active8 Pool & Horse activities facilityMASS Conference Centre (confirmation pending funding)
The cabins will also be used as accommodation for professional development training of mainstream teachers or allied health workers and for tourism-related accommodation for visitors to the Mansfield region. Therefore, the cabins have a range of intended users, but their primary purpose is to accommodate the unique needs and behaviours of children who have autism. The safety and usability for autistic children and their families is a key design priority. We responded by designing for increased resilience in the building systems, designs, and materials. Universal access design measures are incorporated to accommodate users with disabilities. The accommodation and facilities are very practical, resilient, and low maintenance. They offer a comfortable and homelike environment that is enjoyable and a pleasure to be in. We think it’s important that the cabins are cosy and joyful, giving these families a first-rate accommodation experience.
