Kooyong Villa
Our challenge in this Kooyong Villa was not only to create a beautiful home that could flex for different family groups in the short as well as the long-term, but to sympathetically contemporise and expand this significant heritage building. Central to the brief was connecting the indoors with the outdoors, adding modern features such as ensuites, wet rooms and multi-use spaces, all across a challenging 1.6 metre-fall site, with minimum disruption.
Walls were relocated and, in the kitchen, replaced with generous sliding doors opening out in two directions, towards the deck and the pool. Innovative ideas, connecting all four levels across the graded site, provide perfect spaces for kids, adults, friends or extended family, with a spiral staircase leading from the centre of the contemporary living area to a 2,000-bottle cellar and TV/games room. A striking timber island bench provides an exquisitely designed focal point for all gatherings.
