Kooyong House
Kooyong House presented a unique challenge: creating a home that could flex for different family groups in the short and long term, while carefully updating and expanding a significant heritage building. A key part of the brief was connecting indoors and outdoors, adding modern features like ensuites, wet rooms, and multi-use spaces, all across a 1.6-metre fall with minimal disruption.
To make the most of the site, we relocated walls and, in the kitchen, replaced them with generous sliding doors that open out in two directions to the deck and the pool. The design links all four levels of the sloped site, creating spaces that work for children, adults, friends, or extended family. A spiral staircase at the centre of the living area leads down to a 2,000-bottle cellar and TV/games room, while a striking timber island bench provides a beautiful focal point for gatherings.
The result is a home that balances heritage character with modern living, offering flexible, light-filled spaces ready to support family life for years to come.
