Mansfield Autism Statewide Services, Retreat Cabins
Initially, MASS selected Kirby Architects to design twelve Retreat Cabins to accommodate MASS clients and their family when visiting the Mansfield-based facility.
The cabins, each accommodating up to 6 people, will also be used as accommodation for professional development training of mainstream teachers or allied health workers and for tourism-related accommodation for visitors to the Mansfield region. Therefore, the cabins have a range of intended users, but their primary purpose is to accommodate the unique needs and behaviours of children who have autism.
The safety and usability for autistic children and their families is a key design priority. We responded by designing for increased resilience in the building systems, designs, and materials. Universal access design measures are incorporated to accommodate users with disabilities.
All the MASS accommodation and facilities are designed to be very practical, resilient, and low maintenance. They offer a comfortable and homelike environment that is enjoyable and a pleasure to be in. We think it’s essential that the cabins are cosy and joyful, giving these families a first-rate accommodation experience.
