The Swanston Centre provides treatment and care for clients with serious emotional and psychiatric problems. This project reconfigures six existing acute mental health beds into a youth-friendly environment.
To suit youth patients who need acute mental health care, the inpatient bedrooms and ancillary spaces include modern youth-friendly tech-enabled common room and dining space, areas for games, and an updated courtyard.
Designed with emphasis on safety and respect, the spaces have a non-institutional atmosphere that is calming and specifically developed to be non-agitating while expressing compassion and dignity. Safety in Design and universal accessibility were key considerations to make the space suitable for acute mental health patients, their families and staff.
