Goodstart Child Care Flinders Street
Delivering Goodstart Early Learning's first purpose-built childcare centre in the heart of Melbourne presented a unique set of design and construction challenges. Located within a multi-storey commercial building at 278 Flinders Street, the project created an 80-place early learning centre spanning the third floor and part of an adjoining eight-storey tower.
Engaged after the original design significantly exceeded the available budget, we assembled a new consultant team, reviewed the existing documentation, and successfully delivered a high-quality outcome within a demanding timeframe and budget.
The project required extensive coordination with building owners, tenants, engineers, local authorities and specialist consultants. A rooftop playground featuring a large sandpit demanded significant structural upgrades, while innovative solutions were negotiated to deliver compliant indoor play spaces, integrated building services, and landscaped outdoor areas in a highly constrained urban environment.
Despite major challenges—including asbestos remediation, complex structural works, and coordinating crane lifts over Melbourne's tram network—the centre was completed on schedule in time for the new school year.
