State Netball Hockey Centre Concourse

Originally constructed in 2001, the State Netball & Hockey Centre grandstand had become dated and largely functioned as a space to move through rather than a place to stay. Harsh winds, cold weather and ongoing bird nesting made the open concourse uncomfortable for spectators.
Kirby Architects was engaged to refurbish the grandstand, improving its comfort, accessibility and overall presentation while retaining its openness and views across the sporting grounds.
A wind assessment informed the design response, helping to address the harsh conditions without enclosing the space. The ongoing issue of birds nesting also became an opportunity to introduce a new grid ceiling. Designed to prevent birds from entering, the ceiling brings colour, pattern and a strong visual element to the space while assisting with wayfinding.
The kiosk was redesigned to become more of a destination, with improved accessibility, clear signage and seating that encourages spectators to stop and stay. New viewing and seating areas activate the concourse, creating opportunities to eat, watch and gather.
Working within a tight budget, each element was designed to serve a purpose while contributing to the overall character of the space. What was once a largely transitional area is now a more welcoming and comfortable place for spectators, supporting a wider range of events and uses.
